The High School Days: Part 2

The High School Days: Part 2

Hi all, welcome back! I know I say it with every post but I like to keep wishing that everyone stays safe and smart during these times. Mental and physical health is the most important thing at this moment in time.

I really enjoyed my last post about one of my favorite memories playing baseball. If you did not see it I talked about one of the games that I played in while in high school. It was a county championship game that I pitched in during my senior year.

I loved digging up those memories about winning a championship with my best friends. Today, I decided that I am going to talk about another memory I have from playing high school baseball. This particular moment wasn't a game that I played in but it was one of the best games that I have ever witnessed in all of my years of playing baseball.

I was a junior on Wantagh High School's varsity baseball team. Being a junior with all of my friends meant that we really did not get to play that much, I got to play in a few games but I wasn't a starter like I was during my senior year. This game was the biggest game of the year, the Long Island Championship.

It was the best team in Nassau County (us) versus the best team in Suffolk County (Shoreham). Shoreham had arguably the best baseball player on Long Island on their team, he was committed to go play baseball at Notre Dame after high school and he was scheduled to pitch against us. For that reason, not many people gave us a chance to win the game.

Gameday comes and we are all fired up because we were not used to being the underdogs but it fueled us to play our best. The stands were packed with fans from both towns as this was one of the most anticipated games in Long Island baseball history.

We come out in the first inning a score four straight runs off the Notre Dame commit and take a quick 4-0 lead. Nobody saw it coming, their whole team was shocked since this pitcher never gets hit. We held on to this for a while but later in the game they score two runs of their own to cut the lead in half.

We make it to the last inning still holding on to our 4-2 lead and we get the final out to win the game. Our fans exploded and we all rushed out on the field to celebrate all together. It was the best game I have ever been apart of and a memory that I will cherish forever.
