The Worst Scenario
The Worst Scenario
It is something that no one, and I mean no one, saw coming. The Coronavirus pandemic has taken a turn for the worst and has affected many lives. College athletes are now learning just how serious this has become and what can be lost.
However, before I get into the effect that the Coronavirus has had on us and our season, I want to talk about the week before we got the terrible news. We had our first conference series coming up but before that we had two very tough games scheduled. We had one game against Montclair State and another game against a nationally ranked Salisbury team.
Our game against Montclair State got off to a great start for us as we plated a quick run in the first inning to take a 1 to 0 lead. We were able to hold on to this lead for a few innings but then they scored a run in the 5th inning to tie the game up, then in the 8th Montclair State scored another 3 runs to take the lead 4-1. In the last two innings we were unable to score anymore runs and we lost 4-1 in a heartbreaking loss.
The next day we traveled to Salisbury University to take on the 10th ranked team in the country and we knew that we had a lot of work ahead of us. The scoring started early as both teams scored 1 in the first to hold a 1-1 tie. The scoring stopped for a few innings as both teams couldn't find a way to score.
In the 5th Salisbury was able to blow the game open in their favor. They were able to plate several more runs and take the game 11-2. Little did we know then but that was the last game we would play this year.
The following days were filled with concern, confusion, and anxiety as we started hearing rumors that our season would be cut short due to the spread of the Coronavirus. No one believed that our season would actually be over. We then got a text from our coach saying that we had an emergency team meeting.
We knew what was about to happen.
After a 15 minute meeting we learned that our season was in suspension for the moment but most likely done for the year. Everyone was in disbelief, after all our hard-work our season has been cut short. It was a quick but unforgettable journey with the team.
My heart goes out the seniors that have lost the opportunity to play in their final season, but some are not done yet.
We will be back.
