Time For the First Weekend of Games

It's Gameday

The time is here. Finally, the Stevenson University Baseball team is ready to start the new season. For the first weekend of games the team takes the annual trip to Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. to play three games and start their 2020 season.

The first two games of the season took place on a cold Friday morning. The first game was against the host team, Gallaudet University. Let's just say that the Mustangs took control of the game very early.

In the first inning of the game it looked like the Mustangs were going to without scoring but with two outs the offense explodes for 16 runs. It seemed as if the team could not stop getting hits. We scored 16 runs with two outs, totaling 10 hits without getting out before Gallaudet was finally able to get the inning ending out.

After the first it could have been very easy for us to just pack it in and not score any runs considering we did not really need to after scoring 16 in the first, but the opposite happened. The offense never stopped. The final score of the first game was a blowout 31-5 with a great win for the team to start the weekend.

Our next game however was against a way more talented Gwynedd Mercy team compared to the Gallaudet team that we just played. We knew going in to the game that Gwynedd Mercy would be a very good team as they are coming off a conference tournament championship in 2019.

The game did not start the way we would have liked as we fell to a 3-0 deficit in the fourth inning of the game. The Gwynedd Mercy starting pitcher was able to hold our offense scoreless through 7 innings and we were down 5-0 going into the 8th inning of the game. We had 6 more outs to fight back and try  to tie the game.

We fought as hard as we could and scored 2 runs in the 8th inning to make the score 5-2 but we were unable to get anything going in the 9th inning and we lost 5-2. We knew that we could have played better so were upset with ourselves but we were ready to come back Sunday and "Win the Weekend" as our coach puts it.

After an off-day on Saturday we travel back to D.C. on Sunday to take on Muhlenberg University on Sunday morning. Luckily, the weather is more kind to us on this day than it was on Friday. We had a feeling it would be a great game and boy were we right.

We fell to 5-1 lead early on but we managed to fight all the way back and take the lead 6-5 in the 4th inning. We held that same score for a long time before going down 8-6 in the 8th after giving up 3 runs in the 8th.

We never gave up and in the last inning we scored 3 runs in the 9th and took the lead 9-8 and closed it out to win the game. We were super pumped up after such a crazy ending, finishing the weekend 2-1.

We are now ready to keep the momentum going in our direction: Roll Stangs!
