The Week Before Our First Gameday

Preparation Week

After a long, cold, and very tiring pre-season, the 2020 Stevenson University Baseball team is finally getting close to our first game of the new season.  This past week the team had practice every day except Monday. This was a huge week for the team as we have our first game on the 21st, everyone is excited and pumped up to get back to playing against other schools.

The practices during the weekdays are usually pretty laid back. The position players get a lot of fielding and defensive work in while the pitchers practice fielding their own position or throwing a bullpen. As a pitcher I know how important these midweek practices are.

Fielding ground balls and covering first base is a crucial component of being a successful pitcher and can win or lose the team games. During the bullpen sessions we tend to practice pitching the way that we want to pitch when the games start, whether that is getting our fastballs on the inside part of the strike zone or commanding our off-speed pitches for strikes. Also, during the week we tend to have what we call "individuals",this is when we are separated by positions and go over to the Greenspring campus and work with the coaches as a group.

The real fun starts on the weekends. This past week we scrimmaged live against each other for three straight days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). These three days are big for determining what players are going to start where and it helps the coaches see who is going to help the team win on any given day.

We fought through tough weather conditions this weekend as Friday and Saturday we were outside playing in below freezing temperatures. We fought through and played three great days of baseball. These days are super important in showing our team's passion and toughness to battle the weather and have great practices in bad conditions.

We all can't wait to get started with our brand new season. We only have one thing in mind: WINNING.
